When buying premium leather opera gloves, you will often come across the term custom-made. But what does that actually mean?
For some gloves, customization means adjusting the length and circumference of the arm to the customer’s measurements. That is certainly more personal than choosing a standard size.
But there is another question worth asking:
What about the hand itself?
Are the individual fingers measured?
Can differences between the left and right hand be taken into consideration?
And can you choose how closely the glove should fit?
For a premium pair of long leather opera gloves, these details matter.
A glove is more than a hand circumference
Most traditional glove sizing is based primarily on the circumference of the hand.
But two people can have exactly the same hand circumference and still have very different hands.
One person may have long, slender fingers. Another may have shorter fingers and a wider palm. Someone may have a particularly long thumb or different proportions between their fingers.
A standard size has to compromise. And even a glove made according to your hand circumference and arm measurements can still use standard finger proportions. A glove can be made to your measurements without necessarily being made to your proportions.
Your fingers matter
A glove is not simply a shape around the palm.
Each finger has its own length, width and proportions.
The thumb is particularly important because of its different shape, angle and movement.
If the fingers are too long, the leather can bunch at the fingertips. If they are too short, the leather can create tension and restrict movement.

If a glove is made too tight in an area where the leather has limited ability to accommodate movement, it can create uncomfortable tension.
If it is made too loose, the leather may not follow the hand and arm as intended.
The challenge is therefore not simply to make the measurements match.
The challenge is to create the right relationship between the measurements, the leather and the way the glove is meant to fit.
That is one of the reasons why creating a truly made to measure leather opera glove requires considerably more than adjusting the overall dimensions of a standard pattern.
Your two hands may not be identical. Your left and right hands are not necessarily identical either. For many people, the differences are very small.
For others, they can be significant, simply because of natural anatomical differences, or because of an injury or another circumstance that has affected one hand. When the difference is meaningful, using exactly the same measurements for both gloves may not provide the best possible fit.
A truly individual glove should be able to account for the individual.
Long leather opera gloves create another challenge
With a long leather opera glove, the fit doesn’t stop at the wrist.
The glove follows the hand, wrist and arm. Its length and circumference influence how it sits, how it feels, and how securely it stays in place.

But adapting the arm is only part of the equation. The hand and fingers are where the glove begins.
For a leather glove that extends well above the elbow, every part of that relationship becomes more important.

How do you want your leather gloves to feel?
Some people prefer an elegant and comfortable fit, with enough ease to make the gloves easier to put on and comfortable to wear for longer periods.
Others prefer an extremely close fit, where the leather follows the contours of the hand and arm almost like a second skin.
Neither is right or wrong. Fit is personal.
A glove can be perfectly made according to someone’s measurements and still not feel right if the wearer prefers a different degree of ease.
